Colonel Soane M.V. ‘Aholelei has been approved as the next Chief of the Defence Staff of His Majesty’s Armed Forces (HMAF), with his appointment taking effect on 25 October 2026.
Colonel ‘Aholelei has served in His Majesty’s Armed Forces since February 1994, completing more than three decades of service to the Kingdom of Tonga. He currently holds the appointment of Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff and will assume leadership of HMAF upon taking up his new position.
His Majesty’s Armed Forces are the military forces of the Kingdom of Tonga and serve under His Majesty The King as Commander-in-Chief. HMAF plays an important role in the defence and security of the Kingdom, maritime surveillance, disaster response and humanitarian assistance, while also contributing to international and regional peace and security cooperation.
The officers and ranks of His Majesty’s Armed Forces have extended their congratulations to Colonel ‘Aholelei and wished him every success in his new appointment.
