Anthony Bailey was appointed Hon Consul-General by His Majesty The King in Cabinet in May 2021 and his appointment to the Portuguese Republic was confirmed by the granting of an Exequator by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Lisbon in November 2022.
Anthony Bailey has a very long and close association with Tonga. In March 2012 Mr Bailey assisted with elements of the official visits of His Majesty King George Tupou V to Rome, Italy and to the Vatican City State.
In July and August 2012 he hosted Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala & Crown Princess Sinaitakala Tuku’aho of Tonga during their official visit to the Opening of the London Olympic Games and to other events held in London, Wiltshire and Somerset.
In October 2013 together with the 675th Lord Mayor of London, His Honour Sir Gavyn Arthur, Anthony Bailey received Their Majesties King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u Tuku’aho during their visit to the City of London.
In February 2019 Anthony Bailey was received by HRH Princess Salote Mafileʻo Pilolevu Tuita, Lady Tuita The Princess Royal of Tonga and Lord Tuita during her working visit to the United Kingdom.
The Hon Consul-General has visited the Kingdom of Tonga on numerous occasions. Most recently in July 2015 he attended the Coronation of Their Majesties King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u Tuku’aho in Nuku’alofa. The Hon Consul-General also attended the official celebrations of the 60th Birthday of His Majesty The King in Nuku’alofa in July 2019.
In June 2022 The Hon Consul-General formally welcomed and was later received by the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga, the Hon Siaosi ‘Ofakivahafolau Sovaleni, on the occasion of his first official visit to Portugal.
In July 2022 Mr Bailey also meet with the Foreign Minister and Minister of Tourism of Tonga, the Honourable Fekitamoeloa Katoa ‘Utoikamanu during her official visit to Portugal. In August 2023, Mr Bailey received and hosted several high profile events for 104 pilgrims who had travelled from Tonga and Niue for the global World Youth Day pilgrimage which took place in Portugal.
Anthony Bailey also attended the King’s 65th Birthday celebrations in Tonga in July 2024 meeting with royal, government, diplomatic, parliamentary and religious officials and leaders.
