On 22 August 2026, Comendador Anthony Bailey, Hon Consul-General of His Majesty The King of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic, had the honour of greeting H.E. António José Seguro, President of the Portuguese Republic, during the President’s visit to Viana do Castelo for the Romaria de Nossa Senhora d’Agonia.
The President of the Republic was the guest of honour at the Historical and Ethnographic Parade, one of the principal events of the Romaria. He was welcomed to Viana do Castelo by Luís Nobre, Mayor of Viana do Castelo, and received a warm reception from the enormous crowds gathered in the city for the celebrations.
Following his presentation to the President, the Consul-General joined the Portuguese Head of State and other official guests on the presidential podium for the three-hour parade, which brought together thousands of participants in traditional costume, music, folklore and decorated floats celebrating the history and culture of the Alto Minho.
Among the official guests were Alberto S. Santos, Portuguese Secretary of State for Culture and renowned author, the Bishop of Viana do Castelo and a former Prime Minister of Mozambique.
The Consul-General also had the opportunity to greet Secretary of State Alberto S. Santos and to discuss culture, heritage and the role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening relations between Tonga and Portugal.
The occasion provided an opportunity to represent the Kingdom of Tonga at one of Portugal’s major cultural celebrations and to continue the Consulate-General’s engagement with Portuguese national, regional and municipal authorities.
