Tonga mourns passing of Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, former Fijian President and uncle of Tonga’s king

His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, former President of Fiji, has passed away at the age of 84 in Suva.

He died peacefully on 26 March 2026 and is remembered across the Pacific as a distinguished statesman and respected voice in regional diplomacy.

Ratu Epeli served as President of the Republic of Fiji (2009–2015) and held senior roles including Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (1987–1999), High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (2000–2001), Minister of Foreign Affairs (2008–2009), and Speaker of Parliament (2015–2018).

He was the son of Ratu Sir Edward Tuivanuavou Tugi Cakobau and a great-grandson of King George Tupou II (reigned 1893–1918), reflecting the deep ties between Fiji and Tonga.

His Majesty King Tupou VI and Her Majesty Queen Nanasipauʻu Tukuʻaho, together with the Tongan Royal Family and Government, have conveyed their condolences, honouring his lifelong service and contribution to Pacific unity.

Anthony Bailey, Hon Consul-General of Tonga to Portugal said. “I had the pleasure of knowing His Excellency over many years, particularly during his time as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, and during our meetings in Tonga the last of which was at the Coronation of Their Majesties in 2015. His Excellency will be remembered with great respect and affection across Fiji, Tonga, the Pacific  and far beyond. May he rest in peace”. A
