The Kingdom of Tonga acceded to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and signed and ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on 7 July 2026 at United Nations Headquarters in New York, becoming the 179th State to ratify the CTBT.
HE Ambassador Viliami Vaʻinga Tōnē, Tonga’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, deposited the instruments of accession and ratification on behalf of the Kingdom. The TPNW will enter into force for Tonga on 5 October 2026.
These commitments reaffirm Tonga’s dedication to nuclear disarmament, international peace and security, and a safer world for present and future generations.
