On 4 August 2026, Comendador Anthony Bailey, Hon Consul-General of His Majesty The King of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic, attended a seminar in Lisbon on the “Importance of International Law in Maintaining Regional Peace and Security”.
The seminar was jointly organised by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Portugal and the Observatório do Mundo Islâmico and was held at the União de Associações do Comércio e Serviços in Lisbon.
The event brought together members of the diplomatic community, academics, specialists and other guests for a discussion on the role of international law in promoting regional peace and security.
Speakers included professors from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and Professor João Henriques of the Observatório do Mundo Islâmico. The seminar was moderated by RTP journalist Soraia Ramos. H.E. Aisha Farooqui, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Portuguese Republic, also addressed the gathering.
The discussions considered the importance of respect for international law, the principles of the United Nations Charter and the peaceful resolution of disputes in maintaining international and regional peace and security. The Embassy of Pakistan’s account of the seminar also records Ambassador Farooqui setting out Pakistan’s position on regional security issues in South Asia.
The seminar also took place during a year of strengthening diplomatic relations between Tonga and Pakistan. During Tonga’s Diplomatic Week from 25 to 27 March 2026, H.E. Dr Faisal Aziz Ahmed presented his Letters of Credence to HM King Tupou VI as High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Kingdom of Tonga.
The Consulate-General welcomed the opportunity to participate in the seminar and to continue its engagement with the Embassy of Pakistan in Portugal and the Observatório do Mundo Islâmico, while contributing to dialogue on international law, diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
