On 7 August 2026, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala, Minister for His Majesty’s Diplomatic Services and Minister for His Majesty’s Armed Forces, led the delegation of the Kingdom of Tonga to the 2026 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting in Suva, Republic of Fiji.
The meeting brought together Foreign Ministers and senior representatives from across the Pacific Islands Forum family to discuss key regional and international issues affecting the Blue Pacific.
Tonga actively contributed to discussions aimed at advancing a more united, resilient and prosperous Blue Pacific through practical cooperation that respects the sovereignty, priorities and particular circumstances of Pacific nations.
The Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting provides an important platform for Pacific governments to coordinate their approaches to regional and international affairs and to consider issues including regional peace and security, climate change, ocean governance, sustainable development and the increasingly complex geopolitical environment affecting the Pacific.
His Royal Highness has played an increasingly prominent role in Tonga’s regional and international diplomacy since his appointment as Minister for His Majesty’s Diplomatic Services and Minister for His Majesty’s Armed Forces on 28 January 2025.
The Crown Prince also chaired the 2025 Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting in Suva during Tonga’s chairmanship of the Pacific Islands Forum. On that occasion, His Royal Highness emphasised the importance of Pacific regionalism and the “Pacific Way” in maintaining regional unity at a time of increasing geopolitical competition, while stressing the importance of keeping Pacific interests and priorities at the centre of engagement with international partners.
Tonga’s participation in the 2026 meeting continued the Kingdom’s longstanding commitment to Pacific regionalism and to cooperation founded upon mutual respect, sovereign equality and the shared interests of the peoples of the Blue Pacific.
As a Pacific island nation with a vast maritime domain, Tonga has consistently highlighted the particular challenges facing the region, including the effects of climate change, vulnerability to natural disasters, the sustainable management and protection of the ocean, and the need to strengthen regional resilience. Tonga continues to advocate international partnerships that recognise Pacific priorities and respect the sovereignty and independence of Pacific nations.
