Lisbon – His Majesty’s Honorary Consul-General of the Kingdom of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic, Anthony Bailey, was received at the headquarters of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon for a meeting with its Administrator, Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, held at the Foundation’s main offices.
Established in 1956 according to the wishes of its founder, Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, the Foundation is one of Portugal’s most prominent philanthropic, cultural and scientific institutions. With a global reputation for excellence, it plays a leading role in supporting the arts, education, science, social innovation, sustainability and international cooperation.
During the meeting, Administrator Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins and the Consul-General held very positive and substantive discussions, with a particular focus on areas of mutual interest, including climate change, environmental resilience and the protection of the world’s oceans. The Foundation expressed its strong willingness to explore future avenues of cooperation with the Kingdom of Tonga, especially now that the Tongan Consulate-General has been formally established in Portugal.
Administrator Martins acknowledged Tonga’s recognised international voice on issues relating to rising sea levels, ocean governance and climate vulnerability. Opportunities were discussed for collaboration in the fields of scientific research, educational exchange, and cultural diplomacy—reflecting the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to fostering intercultural understanding and global sustainability.
The meeting underscored the potential for a productive relationship between the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Kingdom of Tonga and highlighted the shared interest in advancing solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century.
