Nuku’alofa – July 2024. The Prime Minister of Tonga, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, received Mr. Anthony Bailey, the Honorary Consul General of the Kingdom of Tonga to Portugal
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s office in the St. George Government Building. During their discussion, Mr. Bailey briefed the Prime Minister on the current state of Tongan-Portuguese relations, highlighting his efforts to strengthen bilateral ties since his appointment. Miss Farley Rentschler was in attendance at the meeting.
Before departing the Kingdom, Mr. Bailey had a subsequent meeting with the Prime Minister to further discuss ongoing and future collaborative initiatives between Tonga and Portugal.
Hon. Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni is the Prime Minister of Tonga, serving since December 2021. He previously held key government roles, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education and Training. With a background in IT and defence, he studied at the University of Oxford and the University of the South Pacific. Before entering politics, he worked in regional organisations, focusing on development and security. As Prime Minister, he has prioritised economic growth, climate resilience, and international partnerships. His leadership has strengthened Tonga’s global presence, including an official visit to Portugal and participation in major international forums.
