Ambassador of Hungary receives Tongan Hon Consul General Anthony Bailey in Lisbon - Consulate General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal His Majesty’s Hon Consul General of the Kingdom of Tonga to Portugal, Mr Anthony Bailey, paid a courtesy visit on Her Excellency Dr Emília Fábián, Ambassador of Hungary to the Portuguese Republic since September 2023.

The meeting took place at the Hungarian Embassy in Lisbon and discussions were held as to how to further enhance relations between both countries. The Hon Consul General was also very touched that the Hungarian Embassy chef had prepared handmade biscuits featuring the flag of the Kingdom of Tonga.

Tonga established diplomatic relations with Hungary on 23 September 2011 following a visit to Nuku’alofa of HI & RH Archduke Georg von Habsburg, Special Envoy of the Hungarian Government.

In 2011, His late Majesty King George V of Tonga paid an working visit to Hungary during which he was received by President Pal Schmitt of Hungary and was awarded the Collar of the Order of Merit of Hungary.

Tongan Consul General Anthony Bailey has lived, studied and worked in Hungary since 1990. In April 2013 he was appointed with the Officers Cross of the Order of Merit by the President of Hungary  HE János Áder in April 2023 for his role in promoting British-Hungarian relations and for inter-religious relations.
