8 May 2026. Tonga has taken a further step towards establishing a High Commission in Fiji, with the Lord Privy Seal and Secretary for His Majesty’s Diplomatic Services, Mr Viliami Malolo, leading a delegation to the Fijian capital Suva to advance preparations following the Fijian Government’s consent.
His Majesty’s Cabinet approved the visit to seek advice on the practical, diplomatic and legal requirements for establishing the mission.
During the visit, the European Union Ambassador to the Pacific, Her Excellency Barbara Plinkert, were among others who hosted Mr Malolo and his delegation at the EU Delegation.
“We look forward to Tonga’s future presence within Suva’s diplomatic community,” the EU said in a statement.
The preparations follow discussions between His Majesty King Tupou VI and the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, at State House in Suva on 8 July 2025.
During that meeting, the President welcomed Tonga’s formal interest in establishing a diplomatic presence in the Fijian capital and affirmed Fiji’s willingness to assist.
His Majesty acknowledged Fiji’s longstanding friendship and the historical ties between the two countries, highlighting opportunities for closer cooperation in trade, education and capacity building.
Plans for the mission had also featured in earlier bilateral discussions. In February 2023, the Prime Minister of Fiji, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, and the then Prime Minister of Tonga, Honourable Hu‘akavemeiliku, discussed the proposed High Commission.
