Representative of the Republic for the Azores receives in Audience the Hon Consul-General of Tonga

At the conclusion of his official visit to the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Comendador Anthony Bailey, Hon Consul-General of His Majesty The King of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic, was granted an Audience with Her Excellency Professor Susana Goulart Costa, Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of the Azores, at the historic Convento de Belém in Ponta Delgada.

The Audience on 1 July 2026 took place at the historic Convento de Belém, a former Franciscan convent of considerable historical significance which today serves as the São Miguel offices and official reception venue of the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

Professor Susana Goulart Costa was appointed by His Excellency António José Seguro, President of the Portuguese Republic, and was sworn into office on 24 April 2026, becoming the first woman to serve as Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The Representative of the Republic is the President’s constitutional representative in the Autonomous Region, ensuring compliance with the Constitution, promulgating regional legislation and maintaining the institutional relationship between the Sovereign organs of the Portuguese State and the autonomous institutions of the Azores. The Consul-General was accompanied by his Personal Assistant, Mr Finn Phillips-Riggs.
