The Consul-General of His Majesty the King of Tonga to Portugal, Commander Anthony Bailey, received a prestigious travel award at a ceremony held in Lisbon on Saturday. It was also a world-record gathering in Portugal of more than 103 MTPs – the UN’s Most Travelled Grand Masters from around the world.

MTP’s UN Grand Master status is awarded to travellers and explorers whose visits to all 193 UN member states have been independently verified through passports, visas, flight tickets, photographs and other documentary evidence.

During this event, Consul-General Anthony Bailey was formally recognised and introduced as an MTP UN Grand Master, having truly completed his journey to all 193 UN member states with a visit to Libya in December 2023.

“Travelling has never been about numbers. From a very young age, whilst still in my single digits, I dreamed of seeing the world. Travelling has introduced me to an extraordinary diversity of people, history, politics, languages, cuisines, customs, religions, architecture, wildlife and landscapes. The more one travels, the more the pieces of the jigsaw begin to fall into place and the more I appreciate what a truly remarkable place our planet is,” said Anthony Bailey.

Dr Bailey received his award from the founder and chairman of MTP – Most Traveled People, Charles Veley, and his certificate from the MTP – Most Traveled People champion, Luís Amaral, in Azeitão, an hour south of Lisbon.

The gathering brought together true travellers and explorers from every continent. Naturally, all those who had visited the Kingdom of Tonga as part of their journey to visit every UN member state.
