The Acting High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Tonga to Australia, Curtis Tuihalangingie, welcomed the Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to Australia and Tonga, Her Excellency Carla Lourenço Saragoça, to the Tongan High Commission in Canberra.

This meeting provided a valuable opportunity to hold discussions on the work programmes and initiatives which the Portuguese Government wishes to pursue within the diplomatic relationship between Portugal and Tonga. These include examining opportunities for cooperation on climate change, support for ocean affairs, and preparations for the Ambassador’s visit to Nuku’alofa to present her Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Tupou VI.

The Acting High Commissioner also extended congratulations to the Ambassador on Portugal’s successful campaign, through which Portugal secured election to the United Nations Security Council. The election took place in New York last week and will see Portugal serve for the 2027 and 2028 period.
