Lisbon – October 2023. The Hon Consul General of His Majesty The King of Tonga accredited to the Portuguese Republic, Mr Anthony Bailey, paid a courtesy visit on Her Excellency Sofia Moreira de Sousa, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission in Portugal at her office in Lisbon. Joana Cruz-Schilling, Political Counsellor, was also present.
Portugal has been a member state of the European Union since 1986 and the head of mission was appointed to her current role in 2021 after concluding her four year mandate as the EU Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Cabo Verde. Prior to that she was Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of South Africa.
The Kingdom of Tonga and the European Union enjoy strong ties and work together on a number of common values, interests and challenges, such as climate change, oceans, energy and human rights.
