His Majesty’s Hon Consul General of the Kingdom of Tonga to Portugal, Mr Anthony Bailey, paid a courtesy visit on His Excellency Shivshankar Nail, Ambassador of Tuvalu, Adviser to the Prime Minister and Special Envoy on Oceans and Climate Change.
The meeting took place at the Office of Ambassador Shiv in Lisbon and discussions were held as to how to further enhance diplomatic relations between Tonga and Tuvalu – both Commonwealth monarchic member states and island nations in the South Pacific.
Particular focus was given to the priorities of both governments in area of oceans and climate change. In 2022 Portugal hosted in Lisbon the United Nations Ocean Summit at which both the Tongan prime minister and the foreign minister attended.
Both countries maintain diplomatic relations. HE Mr John Camilleri, Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to Portugal, representing another Commonwealth, island state attended the productive meeting.
