Lisbon – May 2024. To mark the 25 years of diplomatic relations, His Majesty’s Hon Consul General of the Kingdom of Tonga to Portugal, Mr Anthony Bailey, paid a courtesy visit on Her Excellency Ms. Mmamokwena Gaoretelelwe, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Portugal, at her official residence in Lisbon.
The Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of South Africa established diplomatic relations in September 1999. Both countries are active members and partners of international forums including the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
At the invitation of the South African Ambassador, the Tongan Hon Consul General to Portugal later attended on 29 May 2024 African Day celebrations organised by the sixteen African embassies resident in Portugal. The event held at the Lisbon Marriott Hotel including an exhibition of many African nations, a dinner and formal speeches were delivered by senior state, parliamentary, civic and diplomatic personalities including from the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the City of Lisbon.
