Lisbon – May 2024. The Hon Consul General of the Tonga to Portugal met with Her Excellency Ms Maja Markovčić Kostelac took up the position of Executive Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) on 1 January 2019. She is responsible for the running and development of the Agency under the oversight of the Administrative Board.
The EMSA’s mission is to serve EU maritime interests for a safe, secure, green and competitive maritime sector and act as a reliable and respected point of reference in the maritime sector in Europe and worldwide. EMSA capitalises on its unique know-how to position itself as an essential player in the maritime cluster in Europe and beyond.
EMSA works on maritime safety, security, climate, environment and single market issues and tasks, first as a service provider to Member States and the Commission, but also as an innovative and reliable partner and knowledge hub for the European maritime cluster and potentially beyond as a reference internationally.
The Kingdom of Tonga being a maritime nation of the South Pacific shares many of the same interests at EMSA and it hoped that a deeply relationship can be formed with between the Tongan Government and the EMSA.
