Lisbon, 3 October 2025 — The Honorary Consul-General of the Kingdom of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic, Anthony Bailey, attended a diplomatic reception hosted by His Excellency Marc Bichler, Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to Portugal, at the Ambassador’s official residence in Lisbon.
The event marked the Accession to the Throne of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Guillaume V as Luxembourg’s new Head of State, and the elevation of his wife HRH Princess Stéphanie as Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.
The reception gathered numerous heads of mission, senior diplomats and representatives of international organisations, reflecting the strong diplomatic interest in the renewal of the Luxembourgish Head of State.
Diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg were formally established on 1 November 1976, forming the foundation for long-standing cooperation in multilateral engagements and development initiatives.
Tonga’s Ambassador in London, HE The Hon. Titilupe Fanetupouvavaʻu Tuita-Tuʻivakanō, presented her Letters of Credence to HRH Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg on 25 September 2020 as Tonga’s First non-resident ambassador, further consolidating bilateral ties.
Consul-General Anthony Bailey has maintained a longstanding acquaintance with the new Grand Duke, having met His Royal Highness on several occasions in Saudi Arabia, Belgium and the United Kingdom.
At present, diplomatic engagement between the two countries is conducted principally through their respective embassies in London and via established multilateral mechanisms.
