Canberra – June 2024. His Majesty’s Hon Consul-General of Tonga to Portugal, Anthony Bailey paid a series of courtesy visits whilst in Australia with a number of embassies accredited to, or with interest in, Tonga.
The first meeting took place with His Excellency António Albuquerque Moniz, Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to Australia and Sofia Rodrigues Guerra, the Deputy Head of Mission. Ambassador Moniz will soon become the second non-resident Ambassador of Portugal accredited to Tonga in succession to Ambassador António Pedro Rodrigues da Silva. Discussions were held about further strengthening and growing relations between the two ancient and historic maritime nations which established diplomatic relations on 1 November 2008.
In 2022 Tongan Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku (Siaosi Sovaleni) and Foreign Minister Hon Fekitamoeloa Katoa ‘Utoukamanu officially visited Portugal on the occasion of the United Nations Oceans Conference hosted by the Portuguese Government in Lisbon.
