Executive Secretary of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), receives Consul General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal, Anthony Bailey

The Executive Secretary of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), His Excellency Zacarias da Costa, received the Honorary Consul General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal, Anthony Bailey, on 18 October 2023, at the headquarters of the international organisation in Lisbon.

Among those attending the courtesy visit were Ambassador Isilio Coelho, Diplomatic and Political Adviser to the Executive Secretary.

The CPLP – Community of Portuguese Language Countries or Lusophone Community is an international organization and political association of Lusophone nations across four continents, where Portuguese is an official language.

The CPLP was founded in 1996, in Lisbon, by Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé & Príncipe. It operates as a privileged, multilateral forum for the mutual cooperation of the governments, economies, non-governmental organizations, and peoples of the Lusofonia.

The CPLP currently consists of 9 member states and 32 associate observers, located in Europe, South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, totaling 37 countries and 4 organizations.

The Executive Secretary Zacarias da Costa was elected to office in July 2021 having previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of  Timor-Leste from 2007 to 2012.

His Excellency has formally visited the Kingdom of Tonga and was received in Audience by His late Majesty King George V of Tonga.
