Crown Prince of Tonga appointed Foreign Minister and Minister of HM Armed Forces

HRH Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala has been appointed as Tonga’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for His Majesty’s Armed Forces in January 2025. This follows in the footsteps of his father, HM King Tupou VI who before ascending to the throne, held similar roles in the Tongan government, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister for His Majesty’s Armed Forces.

HRH Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala , born on 17 September 1985, is the son of HM King Tupou VI and HM Queen Nanasipauʻu. His Royal Highness pursued his education at the Australian National University, where he obtained a Master of Military and Defence Studies in 2018 and a Master of Diplomacy in 2021. His time studying and working in Australia, along with his early diplomatic roles, has equipped him with the skills and knowledge to navigate both domestic and international political landscapes.

HRH Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala married HRH Crown Princess Sinaitakala Fakafanua in 2012, and they have four children: HRH Prince Taufaʻahau Manumataongo, HRH Princess Halaevalu Mataʻaho, HRH Princess Nanasipauʻu Eliana, and HRH Princess Salote Mafileʻo Pilolevu. His appointment to key government roles in 2025 reflects the Crown Prince’s growing influence in Tonga’s political scene, following a legacy of service and leadership established by his father.
