Lisbon was today in a celebratory mood as Portugal marked the inauguration of its new and 21st President of the Republic, António José Seguro. This followed his landslide electoral victory that secured the highest number of votes in the country’s presidential history.

The formal ceremonies commenced at the Assembly of the Republic (parliament), where President Seguro took the constitutional oath of office before Members of Parliament, senior state officials and invited guests. The dignified and elegant occasion witnessed the new Head of State pledging to uphold the Constitution and faithfully serve the Portuguese people.

Among the distinguished international guests present were King Felipe VI of Spain, together with the Presidents of several Portuguese-speaking nations, including Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé & Príncipe and Timor-Leste, reflecting the enduring ties that unite the Lusophone world.

The programme of events also included a solemn moment of remembrance at the Monastery of Jerónimos, one of Lisbon’s most important national monuments, where tribute was paid to Portugal’s historic and spiritual  legacy and those who have helped shape the nation.

Celebrations later continued at the National Palace of Belém, the official residence of the President of the Republic, where a garden reception was held following the day’s ceremonies. In the evening a further reception was held at the National Palace of Ajuda.

Anthony Bailey, His Majesty’s Hon Consul-General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal, greeted President Seguro at the National Palace of Belém and conveying the warm greetings and best wishes of His Majesty King Tupou VI and the people  and Govenrment of Tonga.

President Seguro warmly reciprocated these good wishes and expressed his appreciation for the cordial and friendly relations that exist between Portugal and the Kingdom of Tonga. Both countries established diplomatic relations in 2008.

The Consulate-General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal looks forward to continuing to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two countries during the new presidential mandate.
