The event marked German Unity Day, commemorated annually on 3 October and symbolising the peaceful reunification of Germany in 1990.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reception brought together numerous heads of mission, senior diplomats and representatives of international organisations, highlighting the continued importance of German Unity Day as a global symbol of peace, democracy and national unity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diplomatic relations between Germany and Tonga date back to a Treaty of Friendship signed with the German Empire in November 1876. Formal relations with the Federal Republic of Germany have been maintained since 1976, reinforced through wide-ranging cooperation in multilateral and development-oriented forums.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-level exchanges have included a State Visit by His Majesty King T\u0101ufa\u02bb\u0101hau Tupou IV to West Germany in 1980, a landmark moment in the modern relationship between the two nations and a demonstration of Tonga\u2019s longstanding engagement with Germany at the highest levels of state diplomacy. \u00a0In 2016, the\u00a0President of the Bundestag (German Federal Parliament\u00a0Norbert Lammert visited Tonga to mark 140 years of relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tonga\u2019s diplomatic representation to Germany is conducted on a non-resident basis through the Embassy\u00a0of the Kingdom of Tonga in London. The mission is headed by High Commissioner, HE The Hon Titilupe Fanetupouvava\u02bbu Tuita-Tu\u02bbivakan\u014d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany is represented to Tonga via its Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand, where HE Ambassador Nicole Menzenbach serves as Germany\u2019s non-resident Ambassador to Tonga. An Honorary Consulate of Germany also operates in Nuku\u2018alofa, supporting bilateral cooperation and consular services.
