{"id":8385,"date":"2024-05-08T00:23:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T00:23:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tonga-gov.pt\/?p=8385"},"modified":"2026-04-10T22:56:58","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T22:56:58","slug":"tonga-hon-consul-general-in-portugal-visits-national-theatre-of-sao-carlos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tonga-gov.pt\/en\/tonga-hon-consul-general-in-portugal-visits-national-theatre-of-sao-carlos\/","title":{"rendered":"Tonga Hon Consul-General in Portugal visits National Theatre of S\u00e3o Carlos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lisbon &#8211; May 2024.<\/strong> At the invitation of the President of the National Theatre of S\u00e3o Carlos, the Hon Consul General of Tonga to Portugal, Mr Anthony Bailey, visited the historic cultural site and met Mr Bailey met with the theatre\u2019s newly appointed Artistic Director, Dutch-born Ivan van Kalmthout.  He was accompanied throughout the tour by Maria Gil of the Special Projects Department of the theatre.   <\/p>\n<p>The National Theatre of S\u00e3o Carlos was inaugurated in 1793 by Queen Maria I of Portugal.  It remains today as the only national theatre dedicated to the production and presentation of opera, choral and symphonic music and is today home to the National Opera company. <\/p>\n<p>The National Theatre will shortly close to undergo a significant multi-million euro refurbishment.
