The Kingdom of Tonga and the Republic of Serbia formally established diplomatic relations on 24 September 2026 with the signing of a Joint Communiqu\u00e9 on the margins of the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.<\/p>\n

The Joint Communiqu\u00e9 on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations was signed on behalf of the Kingdom of Tonga by H.E. Ambassador Viliami Va\u02bbinga T\u014dn\u0113 and on behalf of the Republic of Serbia by H.E. Mr. Radomir Ili\u0107.<\/p>\n

The ceremony took place in the presence of H.E. Mr. Marko \u0110uri\u0107, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, and Hon. Tevita Fatafehi Puloka, Minister for Infrastructure of the Kingdom of Tonga. Their participation underscored the importance both Governments attach to the establishment of diplomatic ties and the opportunities for closer bilateral engagement.<\/p>\n

This milestone opens a new chapter in Tonga\u2013Serbia relations, providing a formal foundation for sustained dialogue, mutually beneficial cooperation, and engagement on matters of common interest. It also advances Tonga\u2019s relations with Europe, broadening its diplomatic ties across the continent and creating further opportunities for partnership.<\/p>\n

The establishment of diplomatic relations also provides a basis for closer cooperation within the United Nations and other multilateral fora, reflecting the importance both countries place on constructive international engagement.<\/p>\n

Held at a time when senior representatives of both Governments were gathered in New York, the signing affirmed their shared commitment to developing a diplomatic relationship grounded in mutual respect and the sovereign equality of States.<\/p>\n
