Tonga has taken a further step towards establishing a High Commission in Fiji, with the Lord Privy Seal and Secretary for His Majesty\u2019s Diplomatic Services, Mr Viliami Malolo, leading a delegation to the Fijian capital Suva to advance preparations following the Fijian Government\u2019s consent.<\/p>\n<p>His Majesty\u2019s Cabinet approved the visit to seek advice on the practical, diplomatic and legal requirements for establishing the mission.<\/p>\n<p>During the visit, the European Union Ambassador to the Pacific, Her Excellency Barbara Plinkert, were among others who hosted Mr Malolo and his delegation at the EU Delegation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to Tonga\u2019s future presence within Suva\u2019s diplomatic community,\u201d the EU said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The preparations follow discussions between His Majesty King Tupou VI and the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, at State House in Suva on 8 July 2025.<\/p>\n<p>During that meeting, the President welcomed Tonga\u2019s formal interest in establishing a diplomatic presence in the Fijian capital and affirmed Fiji\u2019s willingness to assist.<\/p>\n<p>His Majesty acknowledged Fiji\u2019s longstanding friendship and the historical ties between the two countries, highlighting opportunities for closer cooperation in trade, education and capacity building.<\/p>\n<p>Plans for the mission had also featured in earlier bilateral discussions.
