On 7 July 2026, Comendador Anthony Bailey, Hon Consul-General of His Majesty The King of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Rhina de los \u00c1ngeles Bardi Matamoros, Ambassador of the Republic of El Salvador to the Portuguese Republic, at the Embassy of El Salvador in Lisbon. Ambassador Bardi has headed El Salvador’s diplomatic mission in Portugal since presenting her credentials on 11 January 2023.<\/p>\n
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss ways of developing closer contacts between El Salvador and Tonga, two countries separated by the Pacific Ocean but sharing a number of common interests and challenges.<\/p>\n
Discussions included the importance of the ocean to both countries, environmental protection, climate resilience, sustainable development and the challenges faced by coastal and island communities. The Consul-General and Ambassador Bardi also exchanged views on opportunities to encourage greater awareness and contact between their respective countries.<\/p>\n
El Salvador, situated on the Pacific coast of Central America, and Tonga, a Pacific island Kingdom,\u00a0both have strong relationships with the ocean and face the effects of natural disasters and climate-related challenges. These shared concerns provide useful areas for dialogue, particularly in environmental resilience and sustainable development.<\/p>\n
The courtesy call formed part of the Consulate-General’s continuing engagement with the diplomatic community in Portugal and its efforts to promote greater dialogue between Tonga and countries with shared interests in the Pacific, oceans and sustainable development.<\/p>\n
