On 30 July 2026, Comendador Anthony Bailey, Hon Consul-General of His Majesty The King of Tonga to the Portuguese Republic, attended a reception in Lisbon marking the 27th anniversary of the accession to the Throne of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco.<\/p>\n
The Throne Day reception was hosted by H.E. Othmane Bahnini, Ambassador of His Majesty The King of Morocco to the Portuguese Republic, and brought together high representatives of the Portuguese authorities, members of the diplomatic corps and guests from Portuguese and Moroccan public and civic life. \u00a0They included former Portuguese President Dr Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and award winning singer Mia Benita.<\/p>\n
The Kingdom of Tonga and the Kingdom of Morocco established diplomatic relations on 16 January 1995 and have since developed warm and friendly relations, strengthened in recent years by Morocco\u2019s growing engagement with the Pacific Island countries.<\/p>\n
An important element of this relationship has been the Morocco-Pacific Island States Forum. In February 2020, Morocco hosted the Third Morocco-Pacific Island States Forum in La\u00e2youne, bringing together representatives of Pacific Island countries, including Tonga. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in areas including sustainable development, climate change, renewable energy, agriculture, fisheries, tourism and human development.<\/p>\n
Relations have also been strengthened through parliamentary diplomacy. In 2023, a delegation from the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, led by the Speaker, Lord Fakafanua, visited Morocco, providing an opportunity to deepen parliamentary and bilateral ties between the two Kingdoms.<\/p>\n
Morocco has increasingly developed partnerships with Pacific Island countries in areas of particular relevance to Tonga, including climate resilience, food security, agriculture, fisheries, renewable energy and sustainable development. As two Kingdoms with longstanding monarchical traditions, Tonga and Morocco also share a commitment to strengthening cooperation and dialogue between countries from different regions of the world.<\/p>\n
The Consulate-General has maintained close engagement with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Portugal. The Consul-General has a longstanding association with Morocco dating from 1988 and has visited the Kingdom on numerous occasions, most recently in 2023. In 2004, in recognition of his work in furthering European-Moroccan relations, he was appointed by HM King Mohammed VI a Commander of the Royal Order of Al Alaoui.<\/p>\n
The Throne Day celebrations in Lisbon on 30 July 2026 provided a welcome opportunity to reaffirm the friendship between the Kingdom of Tonga and the Kingdom of Morocco and to convey warm wishes to His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the people of Morocco.<\/p>\n
