The Consulate-General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal notes the election of the Portuguese Republic as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term.<\/p>\n
Portugal’s election in the first round of voting, with the highest number of votes among candidates from the Western European and Others Group, reflects the confidence placed in Portugal by the Member States of the United Nations and is a recognition of its longstanding engagement in multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation.<\/p>\n
This will be Portugal’s fourth term on the Security Council, following its previous service in 1960-1961, 1997-1998 and 2011-2012.<\/p>\n
The Consulate-General notes Portugal’s emphasis on multilateralism, sustainable development, international cooperation and ocean affairs during its campaign. These are issues of particular importance to the Kingdom of Tonga and to many Small Island Developing States.<\/p>\n
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Tonga and Portugal on 1 November 2008, relations between the two countries have continued to develop. The Consulate-General looks forward to continuing cooperation with Portugal and to working closely with Portuguese institutions on issues of mutual interest, including sustainable development, climate resilience, ocean governance and support for an effective multilateral system.<\/p>\n
