This followed his landslide electoral victory that secured the highest number of votes in the country\u2019s presidential history.<\/p>\n<p>The formal ceremonies commenced at the Assembly of the Republic (parliament), where President Seguro took the constitutional oath of office before Members of Parliament, senior state officials and invited guests. The dignified and elegant occasion witnessed the new Head of State pledging to uphold the Constitution and faithfully serve the Portuguese people.<\/p>\n<p>Among the distinguished international guests present were King Felipe VI of Spain, together with the Presidents of several Portuguese-speaking nations, including Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 &amp; Pr\u00edncipe and Timor-Leste, reflecting the enduring ties that unite the Lusophone world.<\/p>\n<p>The programme of events also included a solemn moment of remembrance at the Monastery of Jer\u00f3nimos, one of Lisbon\u2019s most important national monuments, where tribute was paid to Portugal\u2019s historic and spiritual \u00a0legacy and those who have helped shape the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrations later continued at the National Palace of Bel\u00e9m, the official residence of the President of the Republic, where a garden reception was held following the day\u2019s ceremonies. In the evening a further reception was held at the National Palace of Ajuda.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Bailey, His Majesty&#8217;s Hon Consul-General of the Kingdom of Tonga in Portugal, greeted President Seguro at the National Palace of Bel\u00e9m and conveying the warm greetings and best wishes of His Majesty King Tupou VI and the people \u00a0and Govenrment of Tonga.<\/p>\n<p>President Seguro warmly reciprocated these good wishes and expressed his appreciation for the cordial and friendly relations that exist between Portugal and the Kingdom of Tonga.
